Best time for Pregnancy photos
There can be many answers to this question depending on a few factors that need to be taken into consideration, including the number of pregnancies and health factors.
Hello! I am Layne Fernandes, Maternity, Newborn & Babies Photographer in the growing city of Aurora, Colorado. I have photographed hundred of families throughout the years and I am here today to share the joy of photographing the very beginning of life and being a part of amazing stories.

First Time Pregnant Photoshoot
The first factor is whether this is your first, second, third or fourth pregnancy. Typically, when you are expecting your first baby, your body is new to changes and so your baby bump may not begin to protrude as early as you might think.
Some women, during first pregnancy, only starts to show a little bump around the 20ish week process and when it gets between weeks 28 to 35 along, that tiny bump becomes more visible!
We are all different individuals. Our bodies tend to respond to experiences in different ways. In my case, it did not take too much time to achieve the round bump visual that we all dream about, but I’ve had friends and clients who did not show any sign of belly bump till around week 32 of pregnancy. Do not feel disappointed if you fit in this scenario. Things will change!
Each case is unique. By the end of the day, it will be about your preference and dream visual coming to life during your artistic photo session. To achieve optimal visual results, it is advisable to schedule your maternity session or photoshoot when you are between 30 and 35 weeks pregnant, regardless of whether this is your first pregnancy or a subsequent one.
This is a good way to ensure your bump is going to be more prominently round.
Remember: our bodies tend to respond in different ways and each pregnancy comes tied to different stories, so are the different personalities of our children.
For experienced moms, with more than one child, a comfortable Maternity Session would be recommended to schedule around the 30 weeks of gestation.
At this stage, moms can handle daily tasks easily, such as picking up younger children, several times, during the moment of their photo session.

Maternity Session with twins
For twins, plan your maternity shoot between weeks 25 and 30, considering your health, belly size, and any risk factors.
Often, you should share all relevant details with your photographer and plan a photoshoot that honors working with a high-risk expecting client. Sharing information about your experiences and any risks associated with a twin or triplet pregnancy can be beneficial.
What is a Specialized Maternity Photographer?
A specialized, Maternity and Newborn, photographer is a professional who has undergone extensive education and training beyond basic photography skills.
As a specialized Maternity and Newborn Photographer, I have attended online and in-person courses that talked about the limitations and risks that certain pregnancies can bring and what can be done, respectfully, during a photo session in all different aspects it comes with: mom-to-be alone or with all inclusive immediate family members coming to the session. I also read, and stay up to date, about pregnancies and neonatal newborn babies, including the ones who are born with syndromes and all the care that comes with working with babies who have oxygen or syndromes.
Each Maternity or Newborn session should be tailored to the client's health needs.
During instances of being put on a bed rest or being at risk of giving birth prematurely, it’s best recommended to prevent unexpected situations by scheduling earlier photography sessions, between weeks 23 to 30 weeks of pregnancy. It’s all about capturing the essence of pregnancy earlier rather than later when this capture might not be possible or too much to handle.
When is it too late to book a Maternity Session?
If the pregnancy is healthy, it's generally not too late unless you're near your due date and might deliver in the studio. Fortunately, this has never happened and we always want to be preventive and watch the calendar of the due date closely.

Cons of a Maternity Photoshoot close to the due date
If you have questions or concerns about Maternity Photoshoots, please reach out to discuss all the things you have in mind. I am more than glad to help you with realistic answers!
Scheduling your photo session earlier to your due date ensures a more comfortable and worry-free experience, reducing concerns about unexpected deliveries or unpredictable Colorado weather.
Comfortable Studio Sessions normally go between 1 or 2 hours.
I have photographed pregnancies at the mark of week 39! I also aimed to record my own progress every three months to document this magical period and everything went really well!
Certain photographers may decline assignments at this advanced stage, while others are willing to proceed responsibly based on your health status and their professional expertise.
