10 Tips to Calm Down a Baby

Taking care of an adorable and cuddly infant is one of the most challenging and rewarding tasks parents and caregivers can face.

Newborn babies bring, not only hope for a better future, but so much joy with sounds, giggles and smiles. However, when a baby gets tired and cries non-stopping, we need to look for the cause in its source. When the source is overtiredness, we need to go back to basics in practical ways, so baby and caregiver can enjoy a moment of relaxation.


Overtired Baby vs. Under-tired

When babies stay awake for too long, they will feel overtired with is excess of cortisol going on his/her system allied to adrenaline as well. Baby will find difficult to fall asleep.

An under-tired baby may have slept way too much and might not be ready for sleeping again.

Both contrasted situations may lead to a fussy baby and strategies to calm them down may differ.



Causes and Signs of an Overtired Baby

By recognizing these signs of feeling overtired, you can help your baby with necessary steps to create an adjusted environment and avoid a disrupted sleep schedule.

  • Missed Naps: skipping or delaying, including an inconsistent bedtime routine.

  • Overstimulation with noise and activity around.

  • Developmental changes with teething or growth spurts.

  • Frequent yawning.

  • Rubbing face or eyes.

  • Difficulty falling asleep.

  • increased fussiness or crying.

  • Hyperactivity or Overexcitement.

Clinginess.

  • Create a calming and quiet environment.

  • Mimic the snugness of the womb by using swaddling.

  • Stablish a consistent sleep routine.

  • Try delicate gentle rocking or walking.

  • Monitor awake times.

  • Avoid overstimulation

  • Use a baby carrier with gentle movements.

  • Provide a comforting item.

  • Use a pacifier when needed.

  • Be very patient and remain calm with your infant.


Babies do not come with a manual and everyone is uniquely individual. By creating small habits that become consistent, the frequency of meltdowns tends to reduce overtime.

A consistent sleep routine associated with a calming environment are important keys to help your baby fall asleep and also stay asleep.
